The Phoenicians, the Romans, the Vandals, the Byzantines, the Arabs—they all shaped the culture of North Africa. This autumn voyage visits magnificent ancient sites, many of which have been inaccessible for decades to travelers from the United States. Starting off in serene Venice, we explore medieval Dubrovnik, and visit the historic ruins at Butrint. We'll explore ancient Carthage and see the spectacular collection of Roman mosaics in the Bardo Museum. We'll travel to Hippo Regius, where the great theologian St. Augustine, was bishop, and take an excursion to the mountaintop town of Constantine, renowned for its dramatic location and its Palais du Bey. We'll also discover Djemila and Tipasa, which rank among the finest Roman cities in the Mediterranean, and Tlemcen and Tangier, which preserve sublime examples of medieval Moorish architecture.
