Live authentically in historic Mantua, a UNESCO World Heritage Site filled with sublime art and architecture, largely untouched by the modern world.  The birthplace of Virgil and the seat of the Gonzaga family for 400 years, the ancient city of Mantua is the ideal setting to inspire creative, intellectual and personal development.  In 2016, it became the Italian Capital of Culture, and in 2017, it was also the European Capital of Gastronomy.

Envisioned as an idyllic immersion program, our rich curriculum includes guided visits to the museums, palaces and hidden corners of Mantua and other neighboring UNESCO towns
such as Ferrara, Milan, Modena, Bergamo and Vicenza. Witness the apex of Italian design and engineering by touring the Ferrari Factory. Cruise Lake Garda and its connected river systems, accessing unique views of Mantua and Veneto's Palladian villas. During optional weekends, attend the renowned Mantua Chamber Music Festival, the Arena of Verona Opera Festival, and the Venice Biennale.

With your Yale faculty and study leaders, engage in lectures in Italian history and European politics; a book club; screenings of Italian films with discussion; travel writing workshops and early morning exercise walks and yoga. Improve your Italian with 20 hours of language instruction for all levels. Converse in the lively piazzas, cafés, and small shops where guests will have the opportunity to become part of the fabric of the community.

For your three week stay, we invite you to make your home in the elegant 13th-century Palazzo Castiglione or in a splendid independent apartment. Experience delicious regional cuisine prepared by a true local chef and learn cooking from the best -- all washed down with wines from Lombardy and Veneto.
